Grebo-Krahn National Park

Grebo-Krahn was declared in 2017 to protect a block of Upper Guinean rainforest in Liberia's southeast, running directly into Côte d'Ivoire's Taï forest across the Cavally river so the two together form one of the largest surviving blocks of this forest type. Forest elephant, pygmy hippopotamus and chimpanzee live in it, including chimpanzees that use stone tools to crack nuts. The park covers around ninety seven thousand hectares and was created with support from international conservation funding.

When to go

November to April is the dry season and the practical window. The heavy rains from May make the roads impassable. Wildlife is heard rather than seen.

What to expect

The park is very new and has almost no infrastructure. Access needs a guide and arrangement well in advance. Sightings of large mammals are very unlikely.
