Thaba-Bosiu

Thaba-Bosiu, a flat-topped sandstone plateau east of the capital Maseru, is the most important historical and cultural site in Lesotho, revered as the birthplace of the Basotho nation. In the early nineteenth century, the great chief and founder-king Moshoeshoe I established his stronghold on this natural fortress, whose sheer cliffs and easily defended approaches allowed his people to withstand repeated attacks and forge a unified nation amid the turmoil of the era. Climbed on a guided walk, the mountain preserves the ruins of the old settlement, Moshoeshoe's grave and those of later kings, and commands sweeping views, including of the distinctive Qiloane pinnacle that inspired the iconic Basotho hat.
