Doboj Fortress

The fortress at Doboj, known locally as Gradina, stands on a hill above the confluence of the Bosna and the Usora, a position that controlled the routes north and made the town a garrison point from the medieval period; the walls are recorded from the thirteenth century and were extended under Ottoman rule. It was restored through the twentieth century and holds a small museum of arms and local history, with the walls and towers walkable and a wide view over the town and the two river valleys. Medieval-themed events and concerts are staged in the enclosure through the summer. The town below is an industrial and rail centre.

History

The stone fortress, one of the chief defences of medieval Usora and a royal property of the Kotromanić dynasty, was built in the early 13th century on the site of an earlier structure of clay and wood from the 10th or 11th century, in the Romanesque style. In the spring of 1415 it was rebuilt in Gothic form, with thicker walls, a five-storey keep and new outer walls, and engineers from Dubrovnik built the cistern in the upper fort; in its history it has been burned and plundered at least 18 times (Wikipedia, Fortress of Doboj).

When to go

May to October when the fortress is staffed and the events run; winter opening is reduced. Weekdays are quiet. Evening events change the character in summer.

Practical notes

Restoration is extensive and much of what stands is rebuilt. The museum is small. The town below is industrial and unremarkable. The visit takes about an hour.
