Doboj Fortress

The fortress at Doboj, known locally as Gradina, stands on a hill above the confluence of the Bosna and the Usora, a position that controlled the routes north and made the town a garrison point from the medieval period; the walls are recorded from the thirteenth century and were extended under Ottoman rule. It was restored through the twentieth century and holds a small museum of arms and local history, with the walls and towers walkable and a wide view over the town and the two river valleys. Medieval-themed events and concerts are staged in the enclosure through the summer. The town below is an industrial and rail centre.

When to go

May to October when the fortress is staffed and the events run; winter opening is reduced. Weekdays are quiet. Evening events change the character in summer.

Honest expectations

Restoration is extensive and much of what stands is rebuilt. The museum is small. The town below is industrial and unremarkable. The visit takes about an hour.
