Gauja National Park

The Gauja carves a wide, wooded valley through soft Devonian sandstone, and that single fact shapes everything here: red cliffs above the water, caves worn into their base, and three castles set on the high ground. Latvians call the Sigulda stretch the Switzerland of Vidzeme, which oversells the height and undersells the calm.

What you'll find

• The Gauja valley itself - the river loops between forested sandstone bluffs, best seen from the Sigulda side viewpoints or a canoe on the water.
• Turaida and Krimulda - castles and manors on the valley rim, linked to Sigulda by a cable car strung across the gorge.
• Sandstone caves - Gutmanis and smaller grottoes cut into the cliff base, some carved with inscriptions centuries old.
• Autumn - the mixed forest turns gold and copper in late September, the single most photographed season in Latvia.

When to go

Late September for colour, summer for canoeing and the adventure park, winter for the bobsleigh track and cross-country trails. The valley is quietest on weekday mornings; Sigulda fills with Riga day-trippers on fine weekends.

Good to know

The park is large and spread out, and there is no single entrance or centre - you pick a base (Sigulda, Cesis or Valmiera) and explore outward. Public transport reaches the towns but not the trailheads, so a car or a bike helps. The cliffs are modest in height; come for the valley and the castles, not for mountains.

Sigulda town has the bobsleigh track and the Aerodium wind tunnel; Cesis, at the park's northern end, is one of the best-preserved small towns in Latvia and deserves its own half day.
