On a small island in Lake Araisi, archaeologists uncovered a Latgallian settlement of the 9th century, and part of it has been rebuilt on the original spot: a cluster of log houses on a wooden platform over the water, reached by a causeway. It is the clearest window in Latvia onto how people lived a thousand years ago.
