One of the oldest open-air museums in Europe, this is a whole countryside of original buildings brought to a pine forest by Lake Jugla: farmhouses, a wooden church, windmills and fishermen's huts from every region of Latvia. Walking it is the quickest way to understand how rural Latvia actually lived.

What you actually see

  • Regional farmsteads - complete timber farm groups from Kurzeme, Vidzeme, Zemgale and Latgale.
  • The wooden church - an 18th-century log church moved here whole.
  • Windmills and workshops - mills, a smithy and craftspeople at work in summer.
  • The lakeside setting - the whole museum sits in pine forest along the water.

When to go

Summer for craft demonstrations, costumed staff and the big folk fairs; autumn for colour and quiet. Allow a good few hours, since it is spread through the forest.

Honest expectations

It is large and you do a lot of walking through woods between buildings, so wear proper shoes and pick a dry day. Out of the summer season some buildings are closed and it is quieter. It rewards slow curiosity more than a quick tick-list visit.

Nearby

Central Riga and its old town are a short ride back; Lake Jugla itself is pleasant for a walk.
