The Korean Folk Village

Opened in 1974, the folk village is a reconstruction rather than a preserved settlement: several hundred houses in regional styles, thatched and tiled, laid out along a stream with fields, a market lane and a magistrate's compound. Craftsmen work in some of the yards, making pottery, paper and ironwork, and the livestock is real. What holds the day together is the timetable of performances: a farmers' band circling the open field with spinning ribbon hats, a tightrope walker keeping up a running commentary while he crosses, horseback riding and a staged traditional wedding. The place is used constantly for filming historical drama, which is why parts of it feel familiar.

When to go

Spring and autumn are the seasons for it. The site is open ground with little shade in July and August and genuinely cold in midwinter. Performances run to a fixed daily timetable, so pick it up at the gate and plan your loop around it. Weekends and school holidays are busy. Allow four hours including the shuttle each way.

Good to know

It is a themed attraction, not a living village, and the ticket is expensive for what is essentially an outdoor museum with a small amusement area attached. Commentary at the performances is almost entirely in Korean. The site is large and involves a lot of walking on gravel and dirt. Some houses are locked, empty or under repair.
