Velika Hoča is a small village near Rahovec with something like thirteen churches in and around it, several medieval, which is an extraordinary number for a settlement this size and reflects its standing as a monastic estate from the thirteenth century onward. Wine has been made here for as long, and old stone cellars sit under the houses. The village is Serb and quiet. The oldest of the churches is generally dated to the fourteenth century, and several hold wall paintings of the period.

What you actually see

  • The churches - around thirteen in and around a very small village.
  • The medieval fabric - several churches dating from the thirteenth century.
  • The stone cellars - the old wine cellars under the houses.
  • The monastic history - the estate the village grew as.

When to go

May to October is the comfortable season. Church access depends on the keyholder and should be arranged. Harvest falls around September.

Honest expectations

Most churches are locked and access needs arranging with the village. Facilities are minimal. It is a small quiet place and half a day covers it.

Nearby

Rahovec is nearby, and Prizren is southeast.
