Abricots

Abricots lies west of Jérémie where a river comes down to the sea through cacao and coffee country, with a long grey-sand beach, a working fishing fleet and a village that runs on both. It is about as far as the road usefully goes on this coast. The setting is green in a way most of Haiti is not, the water is clear, and the village has a small guesthouse or two. The name is old and the apricots it refers to are the mamey, not the European fruit.

When to go

November to March is drier and the road is at its best. The rains make the last stretch difficult. Hurricane season from June to November hits this coast directly.

Practical notes

The road from Jeremie is rough and slow. Accommodation amounts to a guesthouse or two and needs arranging ahead. There are no restaurants in any formal sense and no facilities on the beach.

Jeremie is east along the coast, and Dame-Marie is at the far western tip.
