Brod is one of the villages of the Gora region high in the Sharr mountains, home to the Gorani, a Slavic-speaking Muslim community with their own dialect, dress and musical tradition distinct from anyone around them. Stone houses climb the valley sides with pasture above. Many families work abroad and return in summer, when the village fills and the wedding and festival season runs. The Gora region straddles the border with North Macedonia and Albania, and villages of the same community sit on all three sides.

What you actually see

  • The Gorani community - a Slavic-speaking Muslim group with its own dialect.
  • The stone village - houses climbing the valley sides.
  • The high pasture - the grazing above the settlement.
  • The summer return - the village filling when families come back from abroad.

When to go

June to September is when the village is fullest and the weather best. Winter brings deep snow and many houses are shut. Festivals fall in the summer months.

Honest expectations

The village is emptying as families settle abroad permanently. Facilities are very limited. The road up from Prizren is long and winding.

Nearby

Dragash is nearby, and the Sharr park is around it.
