The Sharr mountains run along Kosovo's southern border and the national park covers a large part of them: high pasture, Bosnian and Macedonian pine forest, glacial lakes in cirques and summits over two and a half thousand metres. Shepherds still bring flocks up for the summer and the Sharr dog was bred here. Balkan lynx and brown bear are recorded in the park. The park was extended in 2012 and now covers around fifty three thousand hectares, second in size only to the Bjeshket e Nemuna national park in the west.

What you actually see

  • The high pasture - summer grazing still worked by shepherds.
  • The pine forest - Bosnian and Macedonian pine across the slopes.
  • The glacial lakes - the tarns held in cirques below the summits.
  • The summits - peaks running over two and a half thousand metres.

When to go

June to September is the walking season. Winter brings skiing at Brezovica and deep snow. Storms build on the high ground in summer afternoons.

Honest expectations

Trail marking is inconsistent and navigation matters on the high ground. Facilities inside the park are minimal. Border proximity means care with routes on the ridges.

Nearby

Prevalla is within it, and Prizren is north.
