The Rugova Canyon

The Rugova Canyon, carved by the Lumbardhi River just west of the city of Peja, is one of Kosovo's most spectacular natural sights, a dramatic gorge of towering, sheer limestone cliffs plunging to a rushing mountain river. Winding for some 25 kilometres, it is the gateway to the wild, beautiful Bjeshkët e Nemuna, the Accursed Mountains, a rugged range of soaring peaks shared with Albania and Montenegro. The canyon and surrounding mountains have become a growing hub for outdoor adventure, offering hiking, rock climbing, a thrilling via ferrata bolted to the cliffs, and, in winter, snow sports, amid stunning, unspoilt scenery.

When to go

May to October, for the best hiking, climbing and weather in the canyon and mountains; the higher trails of the Accursed Mountains are best in the summer months when clear of snow, while winter brings snow sports. The via ferrata and adventure activities run in the warmer season, arranged from Peja.

Honest expectations

Kosovo's outdoor tourism is still developing, so infrastructure and marked trails, while improving, are more basic than in the Alps, and the higher mountain routes demand proper preparation and, ideally, a guide; the region rewards adventurous, self-reliant travellers. For dramatic canyon scenery, exciting via ferrata and access to the wild, unspoilt Accursed Mountains, though, far from any crowds, Rugova is a superb and underrated natural highlight.
