The Chalbi is the bed of a lake that dried thousands of years ago, and what remains is a flat of pale clay and salt crust stretching to the horizon between Marsabit and the eastern shore of Lake Turkana. In the dry season it is hard and drivable, and vehicles cross it in a straight line at speed with nothing to steer by; after rain it turns to a sticky mud that has trapped and swallowed vehicles. Mirages are constant and dramatic. The desert is not empty of people: Gabbra herders move camels and goats across it between wells and seasonal grazing, and settlements like Kalacha and North Horr sit at springs on its margins. Crossing it is part of the overland route to Loiyangalani and the Turkana shore, and it is one of the more remote drives in East Africa.

What you actually see

  • The white salt flat - a hard pale crust running to the horizon.
  • Mirages - constant shimmering distortion over the surface.
  • Gabbra herders - camel and goat caravans crossing between wells.
  • Oasis settlements - Kalacha and North Horr at springs on the margins.

When to go

Dry seasons only. After rain the crust becomes an impassable trap, and vehicles have been stuck for days. Travel early in the day for cooler temperatures and better light on the flats. Always carry water, fuel and recovery gear.

Honest expectations

This is genuinely remote travel: no fuel, no water, no signal and no rescue for long distances. Travelling in a single vehicle is unwise; two is standard practice. A local driver who knows the route matters more than any map. Check conditions in Marsabit before setting out.

Nearby

Marsabit and its forest park lie east; Loiyangalani and Lake Turkana are west.
