Wadi Mujib

Wadi Mujib cuts down from the Jordanian plateau to the Dead Sea shore, which means the entrance to the reserve sits at roughly the lowest land elevation on earth. The Siq Trail runs upstream into a narrowing sandstone gorge, and it is not a walk beside a river but a walk in one: you wade, swim short sections, and haul yourself up several waterfalls on fixed ropes and ladders, wearing a life jacket the whole way. The rock is polished smooth and turns deep orange where the light reaches it. The trail is self-guided, out and back, and takes two to three hours. Other routes in the reserve, including the Malaqi and Ibex trails, are longer, guided and seasonal.

What you actually see

• The Siq Trail - the upstream wade through the narrow gorge, ropes at the waterfalls.
• The final waterfall - the turnaround point, where the gorge opens into a pool.
• The Dead Sea shoreline - the reserve entrance sits on the lowest shore on earth.
• Nubian ibex - reintroduced in the reserve's upper reaches, seen on the guided trails.

When to go

The Siq Trail runs roughly April to October and closes for the winter, when flash flooding makes the gorge lethal. Go early in the day for cooler water and thinner crowds; afternoons on weekends are busy.

Honest expectations

This is genuinely physical: swimming against current, hauling on wet ropes, and scrambling on slick rock. It is not suitable for weak swimmers or small children, and anything you carry will get soaked, so a dry bag is essential and phones are frequently lost here. Closure dates shift with rainfall, so confirm before driving out.
