Mount Nebo

Mount Nebo is one of the most revered holy sites in Jordan, a ridge overlooking the Jordan Valley where, according to the Bible, Moses stood to gaze upon the Promised Land he would never enter, and where tradition holds he died and was buried. A place of Christian pilgrimage, it is crowned by a memorial church sheltering beautiful ancient Byzantine mosaics, and offers a vast, sweeping view over the Dead Sea, the Jordan Valley and, on a clear day, the Holy Land beyond.

History

On the summit, Syagha, the remains of a Byzantine church and monastery were found in 1933. The church was first built in the second half of the 4th century to mark the place of Moses' death and was excavated from 1933 to 1938 by Sylvester Saller, and in 1963 the Custody of the Holy Land put Virgilio Corbo in charge of restoring its mosaic floors (Wikipedia, Mount Nebo).

It is a place of quiet pilgrimage and a viewpoint rather than a large site, seen in an hour or so, so it is best combined with nearby Madaba, famous for its mosaic map, and the Dead Sea. The famous view can be hazy, so its impact depends on a clear day. Modest, respectful dress is appreciated at the holy site.
