Seymour Tower

Seymour Tower stands on a rock about two kilometres off Jersey's southeastern corner, a square granite tower built in 1782 against French landings, and it can only be reached on foot across the reef at low tide with a guide, because the water comes back fast across a very large area of flat ground. The tower can be stayed in overnight, which means being cut off by the sea for hours on either side.

History

The tower was one of 30 coastal towers ordered by Field Marshal Henry Seymour Conway after the Battle of Jersey of 6 January 1781, of which only 23 were built, and it is the only square one; construction began in 1782. The States of Jersey bought it in 1923 for £120, and Jersey Heritage acquired it in 2006 (Wikipedia, Seymour Tower).

When to go

April to September is the main season for guided walks. Crossings run to the tide, not a timetable. Winter walks are occasional.

Practical notes

Going without a guide is genuinely dangerous. Crossings depend on the tide and cancel in poor visibility. The tower has no electricity or running water.
