Mont Orgueil Castle

Mont Orgueil Castle, rising in dramatic tiers of stone above the pretty fishing harbour of Gorey on Jersey's east coast, is one of the finest medieval castles in the Channel Islands. Built from the thirteenth century to defend the island against France, whose coast lies just a few miles across the water, this great concentric fortress climbs the rock in a maze of towers, gatehouses, halls and battlements, layered with over 800 years of history. Beautifully preserved and imaginatively presented, with tableaux and views from its ramparts across the harbour and over to Normandy, the castle offers a rich journey through Jersey's past and one of the island's most striking and photogenic landmarks.

When to go

April to October brings the mildest, driest weather and long days for exploring the castle and its ramparts, when the site is fully open; spring and early autumn are pleasant and quieter. The views across to France are clearest on bright, clear days.

Honest expectations

Mont Orgueil is a steep, multi-level castle involving plenty of climbing stairs and ramparts, so comfortable footwear helps, and it can be busy in peak season. As a magnificent medieval fortress rising in tiers above a pretty harbour with views to France, layered with centuries of history, though, Mont Orgueil Castle is a genuinely striking and rewarding landmark.
