La Pouquelaye de Faldouet stands on high ground above Gorey, a Neolithic passage grave built around four thousand BC with a long passage leading to a circular chamber and a terminal cell roofed by a single capstone estimated at around twenty tonnes. Excavation in the nineteenth century found human bone, pottery and polished stone axes. The mound that covered it is gone, so the structure stands exposed in a field.

What you actually see

  • The capstone - a single slab estimated at around twenty tonnes over the end cell.
  • The passage - the long entrance leading to the circular chamber.
  • The exposed structure - the tomb standing without its covering mound.
  • The hilltop setting - the high ground above Gorey and the eastern coast.

When to go

April to October is the pleasant season. The site is open at all times and unstaffed. Grass grows long around it in summer.

Honest expectations

The covering mound is gone, so the tomb is a stone structure in a field rather than a mound. There is no interpretation beyond a board. Access is on foot down a lane.

Nearby

Gorey is below, and St Catherine's Breakwater is north.
