teamLab turned digital art into a full-body experience, and Planets in Toyosu is the flagship: shoes off at the door, trousers rolled, and then a sequence of vast immersive rooms where the art responds to you - wading knee-deep through mirror-black water while koi of pure light swim around your legs and burst into flowers on touch, drifting through a hall of endlessly falling blossom, lying under a dome where whole universes bloom and collapse. It is art, playground and physics experiment at once, deliberately camera-friendly and genuinely astonishing in person, and it has become one of Tokyo's defining contemporary experiences.

When to go

Indoors and identical in any season, which makes it the perfect rainy-day or brutal-summer card to hold. Weekday mornings are calmest; evenings and weekends run shoulder to shoulder. Book the timed ticket days ahead in busy seasons - walk-ups often meet sold-out boards.

Honest expectations

You will be barefoot in shared shallow water and on mirrored floors - wear rollable trousers or use the provided shorts, and skip it if that puts you off. The experience is crowd-dependent: at capacity, contemplation becomes queue management for the famous rooms. It is also unabashedly a photo factory - lean in, take the pictures, and let purism go. Check current exhibits before booking; installations rotate.
