Ghibli Museum

The Ghibli Museum is Studio Ghibli's own building, designed under Hayao Miyazaki's direction like one of his films: a curving, ivy-grown house of stained glass, spiral stairs and hidden corners in leafy Inokashira Park, made for wandering rather than queueing past exhibits. Inside are rooms recreating the studio's cluttered drawing desks, a small cinema screening short films that exist nowhere else, a giant plush Catbus that children may actually climb on, and on the roof, standing guard in the garden, the life-size robot soldier from Laputa. There are no fixed routes and photography inside is barred by design - the museum asks you to simply get lost in it.

When to go

Indoors and lovely in any season - the park adds cherry blossom in spring and maples in autumn. The real planning is tickets: they go on sale monthly in advance, sell out fast, and are never sold at the door. Set a reminder for the sale date well before your trip.

Honest expectations

The ticket sale is the honest hurdle - miss the monthly window and no amount of showing up helps. The museum is smaller than fans expect and can feel crowded in its cosy spaces; it rewards slow wandering over checklist speed. No interior photos genuinely improves the visit once you accept it. Devotees should also look at Ghibli Park near Nagoya for the full-scale film worlds.
