Naoshima turned a small fishing island in the Seto Inland Sea into contemporary art's most improbable pilgrimage - a decades-long project of the Benesse Foundation that seeded museums, installations and architecture across its hills and harbours. Tadao Ando built the island's anchors: the Chichu Art Museum, sunk almost entirely underground so that concrete geometry and natural light stage Monet's water lilies, James Turrell and Walter De Maria; the Lee Ufan Museum in a quiet valley; and Benesse House, a museum you can sleep in. Yayoi Kusama's dotted Yellow Pumpkin waits at the end of its pier like the island's mascot, and in Honmura village the Art House Project has converted old wooden houses, a shrine and a former dentist's into walk-in artworks. Bicycles, sea light and slow ferries complete the composition.

What you actually see

  • Chichu Art Museum - Monet and Turrell lit by the sky, underground.
  • The Yellow Pumpkin - Kusama's dotted icon on its pier.
  • The Art House Project - Honmura's village houses turned installations.
  • Benesse House - Ando's hilltop museum-hotel above the sea.

When to go

April to June and September to November bring kind cycling weather and soft sea light. In Setouchi Triennale years the islands add dozens of works - and multiply the crowds accordingly.

Honest expectations

Plan like an adult: Chichu requires timed online booking and sells out, most sites close Mondays, and tickets across three or four venues add up to serious money. Ferries and island buses run to rural schedules - miss one and the day reshuffles. Photography is banned inside the main museums; the pumpkin queue at golden hour is real.

Nearby

Teshima and Inujima's sister art sites, Takamatsu's Ritsurin Garden and the Inland Sea ferries.
