Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter

Kurashiki preserves the prettiest merchant quarter in western Japan - a willow-lined canal flanked by white-walled kura storehouses with black-tiled lattice plaster, built when the town grew rich shipping rice under direct shogunal control. Flat-bottomed boats still punt the canal in season, the storehouses now hold craft shops, denim boutiques trading on the region's jeans-making fame and small galleries, and the quarter's great surprise stands in Greek-temple stone at the canal's head: the Ohara Museum of Art, opened in 1930 as Japan's first museum devoted to Western art, where El Greco and Monet hang a corridor from Edo-period rooflines. Evening is the quarter's quiet triumph - day-trippers drain away, lanterns and soft floodlight take the white walls, and the canal turns to black glass.

The quarter is compact - two or three streets and the canal - so day-trippers can feel they have seen it in an hour; the museums and back lanes reward the slower half day. Canal boats sell out on fine weekends and pause in rain. It pairs naturally with Okayama's Korakuen garden rather than standing as a full day alone.
