Bog Walk Gorge

The Rio Cobre cuts a narrow gorge through limestone between Spanish Town and Linstead, and the road threads it. Flat Bridge, built in the eighteenth century, crosses the river at the bottom with no parapet or railing of any kind, controlled by traffic lights because it is too narrow for two vehicles. Vehicles have gone off it into the river over the years, and the bridge has accumulated a body of local stories to match. The gorge floods in heavy rain and closes.

What to look for

• Flat Bridge - an eighteenth-century crossing with no railings on either side.
• The gorge - limestone walls closing in on the Rio Cobre.
• The traffic lights - single-lane control on a bridge too narrow to pass.
• The river - the Rio Cobre running fast below the road.

When to go

December to April is the drier season and the gorge is least likely to flood. Heavy rain closes the road entirely and this happens several times a year. Traffic is heavy at commuting hours.

Things to know

The bridge genuinely has no railings and vehicles have gone into the river; this is not a place to stop and wander. Flooding closes the route with little warning. There is nowhere safe to park in the gorge.
