Lammerklamm

The Lammer cuts through limestone between the Tennengebirge and the Osterhorn group at Scheffau and produces one of the deepest gorges in the Salzburg region - locally called the Lammeröfen, the Lammer ovens, for the closed pot-like sections where the walls narrow to a few metres with seventy or eighty metres of rock above. A walkway of galleries, steps and bridges runs through part of it, opened in the 1890s and rebuilt since, and the water below is a strong green from the limestone. It takes under an hour to walk and the gorge continues beyond the built section as a route for canyoning, which is run commercially in summer. The lower Lammer through the valley is used for rafting. Flow varies hard with snowmelt and rain.

May to October; closed in winter. Two hours.

What to expect

The built section is short - under an hour. Boards are permanently wet and slippery. High water closes it, and it shuts for the winter. Canyoning is separate and needs an operator.
