Palmanova

Venice founded Palmanova on 7 October 1593 as a purely military creation: a nine-pointed star of ramparts and ditches around a hexagonal central square, with streets radiating outward on a strict geometry derived from Renaissance ideal-city theory. The design worked as fortification but the town struggled to attract residents, and Venice eventually populated it by pardoning prisoners on condition they settle there. Venice added a second ring between 1658 and 1690, and an outer third followed between 1806 and 1813 under Napoleonic rule, so three periods of defence survive concentrically. It was UNESCO-listed in 2017 with other Venetian defence works. The star shape is only fully legible from the air.

History

The Venetian Republic founded the town on 7 October 1593, a date chosen to mark the Christian victory over the Ottoman Turks at Lepanto in 1571. No one chose to move there, and by 1622 Venice was pardoning criminals and offering them free building plots and materials to settle; a second ring was built in 1658 to 1690 and the outer line in 1806 to 1813, under Napoleonic rule (Wikipedia, Palmanova).

When to go

April to October; a historical reenactment fills the town in early September. The ramparts are walkable but overgrown in places. Winter fog is heavy.

Good to know

The star is not visible from the ground and the town reads as ordinary at street level. Rampart paths are uneven and partly overgrown. The centre is quiet.
