Palmanova

Venice founded Palmanova on 7 October 1593 as a purely military creation: a nine-pointed star of ramparts and ditches around a hexagonal central square, with streets radiating outward on a strict geometry derived from Renaissance ideal-city theory. The design worked as fortification but the town struggled to attract residents, and Venice eventually populated it by pardoning prisoners on condition they settle there. Napoleon and later the Austrians added further outer rings, so three periods of defence survive concentrically. It was UNESCO-listed in 2017 with other Venetian defence works. The star shape is only fully legible from the air.

When to go

April to October; a historical reenactment fills the town in early September. The ramparts are walkable but overgrown in places. Winter fog is heavy.

Honest expectations

The star is not visible from the ground and the town reads as ordinary at street level. Rampart paths are uneven and partly overgrown. The centre is quiet.
