Cregneash

On the windswept headland above the Sound, Cregneash preserved what the modern island let go: the crofting village - whitewashed, thatched and turf-smoked - kept the Manx language and the old ways latest, and now works as a living folk museum where costumed crofters spin, smith and till among four-horned Loaghtan sheep, Harry Kelly's cottage keeps the home of one of the village's last native Manx speakers, and the fields run on horse and hand as the demonstrations require. The village's lanes end at headland views over the Calf; the whole ensemble is heritage with mud on its boots.
