UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage
Vanuatu has over a hundred living languages across its islands and one of the strongest surviving customary cultures in the Pacific, known as kastom - the body of traditional law, practice, ceremony and knowledge that communities maintain alongside modern life. Visitors may be welcomed for ceremonies, dances, kava preparation and demonstrations of skills like sand drawing, an intricate practice of tracing continuous patterns in sand that carries meaning and memory, listed by UNESCO as intangible heritage. Kava here is drunk seriously and ceremonially, especially at dusk, and is stronger than the Fijian version.
What you actually see
- Sand drawing - the continuous-line patterns UNESCO recognises.
- Kava ceremony - the evening ritual, taken seriously and strong.
- Village dances and ceremonies - performed by communities on their own terms.
- Island differences - kastom varies enormously between the islands.
When to go
The dry season from April to October is the practical travel window. Ceremonial calendars vary by island - the Pentecost land diving runs roughly April to June, and other events follow local seasons. Arrangements should always be made through operators who work with the communities.
Honest expectations
These are living communities, not attractions - visits happen on their terms, custom fees are the norm, and photography often requires permission or is prohibited for certain ceremonies. Some staged performances near Port Vila are thin compared with genuine village visits further out. Kava is strong and should be treated with respect and moderation. Travel between islands means small planes and boats with weather delays.
Nearby
Pentecost for land diving, Tanna for Yasur volcano and kastom villages, and Malekula's cultural sites.
