Koutammakou of Benin

The Batammariba - 'the people who build with earth' - straddle the Togo-Benin border, and their takienta tower-houses rise on both sides of the Atacora: two-storey fortress homes of banco earth, round turrets capped with thatch granary hats, cattle below and living quarters above, built by hand to a template that is architecture, cosmology and family record at once. UNESCO's Koutammakou listing, long Togo-side only, was extended across the border in 2023 to embrace the Benin villages around Boukoumbe - where visits run with village guides, markets trade sorghum beer and shea, and the escarpment country between the houses walks beautifully in the dry months.

What you actually see

• The takienta houses - turreted earth fortresses in their fields.
• The granary turrets - thatch-capped towers holding the harvest.
• Boukoumbe's market - the Batammariba world trading by rotation.
• The Atacora walks - escarpment paths between the villages.

When to go

November to February gives dry paths and post-harvest village life; building and re-thatching happen then too, showing the architecture in action. Market days rotate - ask in Natitingou.

Honest expectations

These are homes, not exhibits: entry is by invitation through your guide, fees and small purchases are the fair exchange, and photography follows permission - of people always, of houses usually. Facilities are village-level; Natitingou is the comfortable base. The Togo-side villages pair naturally for those crossing.
