Ambrym Sand Drawings

Sand drawing in Vanuatu is made with one finger in a single continuous line that never lifts and never retraces, producing a symmetrical figure on sand, ash or clay, and each design carries meaning: a story, a place, a ritual instruction or a message left for someone. Around eighty distinct language groups practise it. UNESCO inscribed the tradition in 2008. Ambrym is one of the islands where it is strongest.

When to go

May to October is the practical travel season. Demonstrations are arranged rather than scheduled. Custom timing governs when certain designs may be made.

What to expect

There is no fixed place to see it and demonstrations must be arranged through a village or operator. Some designs are restricted and cannot be shown or photographed. What is shown to visitors is a small part of the repertoire.
