Castle Rushen

Castle Rushen rises from Castletown's harbour in limestone completeness - begun in the Norse kings' era, expanded through the medieval centuries, and preserved so thoroughly that it ranks among Europe's finest examples of its kind: portcullis, keep and curtain walls intact, period rooms dressed to their Kings-of-Mann centuries, and the working clock Elizabeth I gifted in 1597 still keeping the town's time. The castle served as fortress, mint, prison and courthouse across its career - court sessions continue ceremonially - and the ramparts survey the old capital's Georgian squares and the harbour's comings.

History

The castle is thought to have been built in the 10th century under the Kings of Mann and the Isles, and an old oak beam found in it in the mid-19th century carried a date from that era. It stands over the Market Square and the harbour of Castletown, the island's historic capital (Wikipedia, Castle Rushen).
