Titanic Experience Cobh

Queenstown, now Cobh, was the Titanic's final port. On 11 April 1912 the ship anchored in the harbour and 123 passengers were tendered out to her from the White Star Line office on the quay - seven in first class, three in second and 113 in third, most of them emigrants. Of those 123, 44 survived. The museum occupies that office, and the tour starts by issuing each visitor a boarding card with the name and details of one of those passengers, ending with what happened to them, which is a device but an effective one given the building you are standing in. The original pier where the tenders left survives at the back and is included. It is small - the tour runs about an hour with a mix of guide, film and reconstruction - and it is one of two Titanic attractions in Cobh, the other being the Heritage Centre, which covers emigration more broadly.

When to go

Any season; indoors. Tours run at set times and book up in summer and on cruise-ship days. An hour covers it.

Practical notes

Small - an hour, and the tour is timed and guided rather than self-paced. Reconstruction and film do much of the work. There is a second, separate Titanic and emigration attraction in the town, which confuses visitors.
