Irish Tea Culture

Ireland is consistently at or near the top of world tea consumption per person, ahead of Britain by most measures, at somewhere between four and six cups a day on average. The blend is the reason it tastes different: Irish tea is heavily weighted toward Assam, which is strong and malty and stands up to milk, a preference that dates from the period when Irish buyers were shut out of the better Ceylon supply and bought Assam instead, and the taste stuck. It is drunk strong, with milk, from a mug rather than a cup. Two brands divide the country - Barry's from Cork and Lyons from Dublin - and the loyalty is genuine and semi-tribal, with strong opinions about which is which. The social function matters more than the drink: offering tea is the standard response to any arrival, any crisis and any conversation, and refusing is understood as a formality to be overcome rather than an answer.

Any time. Both brands are in every supermarket. Cafes serve it, but the domestic version - strong, in a mug, with a biscuit - is the real form.

What to expect

Made strong by default, so ask if you want it weak. Herbal and speciality teas are widely available but not what is meant by tea here. The brand loyalty is real and worth not dismissing lightly.
