Gallarus Oratory

Gallarus is a small church of unmortared stone, its walls curving inward course by course until they meet along a ridge, so the whole building looks like an upturned boat left on the grass. There is one door at the west end and one small round-headed window opposite, and inside it is dark, dry and about the size of a room. The dating is argued over, with estimates spread across the early medieval centuries, and nobody can say with certainty who built it or when. What is not in doubt is the craft: the stones are laid to shed rain outward, and the interior has stayed dry for a very long time.

What you actually see

• The corbelled walls - courses of stone stepped inward to close the roof without mortar.
• The east window - a small round-headed opening, the only light besides the door.
• The interior - a single dark, dry space you can stand in, barely larger than a room.
• The setting - green fields running down towards Smerwick Harbour and the Atlantic.

When to go

The monument stands in the open and is reachable in any season and any weather. The peninsula is busiest from June to August, when the Slea Head road runs nose to tail and coaches struggle at the bends, so spring and autumn are far better. Late afternoon light comes straight through the west door.

Honest expectations

The building is tiny and the visit lasts minutes, which surprises people who have driven a long way for it. A private visitor centre beside the site charges for parking although the monument itself is free, which annoys some. The field is wet underfoot, and in high season a queue forms to photograph an empty doorway.
