Bunratty Castle

Bunratty is a square tower house of the fifteenth century, the latest of several castles on a site that controlled a crossing near the Shannon estuary. It stood as a roofless shell until a restoration in the 1950s put floors, roof and furnishings back, using a collection of medieval and later pieces gathered for the purpose, so the interiors are a reconstruction rather than a survival. The Great Hall, the chapel ceiling and the tight stairs up to the parapet are the core of the visit. Around the castle a folk park has been assembled from relocated and rebuilt buildings: a farm street, cottages, a school and a forge, laid out as a nineteenth century village.

When to go

Open all year, with the folk park at its best from late spring to early autumn when the cottages are staffed and the gardens are in leaf. Mornings are quieter, since the castle fills when tour buses stop between the airport and Galway. The evening banquets run in two sittings and need booking well ahead.

Honest expectations

It is the most packaged historic site in the country and feels like it, with a shop, a costumed banquet and coach parties on a loop from the airport. The furnishings are a curated collection, not the castle's own. Stairs are steep spirals, the folk park is a long walk in the rain, and family tickets add up fast.
