Al-Ukhaidir Fortress

Al-Ukhaidir is among the best-preserved early Islamic buildings anywhere: a rectangular fortified enclosure roughly 175 by 170 metres with round towers along the walls, containing a palace of courtyards, vaulted halls, a mosque and living quarters, built around 775 in the early Abbasid period and generally attributed to a nephew of the caliph al-Mansur. What makes it remarkable is completeness: barrel vaults, blind arcading, staircases and upper storeys survive, so it is possible to walk through the plan of an eighth-century palace rather than infer it from foundations. It stands alone in flat desert with nothing around, which sharpens the effect. Gertrude Bell surveyed and published it in 1909, and her photographs remain a reference for its condition.

When to go

November to March; the desert is severe from April to October and there is little shade inside. Mornings and late afternoon give the best light in the courtyards. It combines with Karbala on a day trip.

Honest expectations

Some sections are unstable and closed off. Interpretation is minimal. The interior is dark in places and a torch helps. There are no facilities of any kind at the site and the drive is an hour each way from Karbala.
