Sa'dabad occupies about a hundred and ten hectares of wooded hillside in northern Tehran and was the summer residence of the Qajar and then the Pahlavi rulers, and it holds eighteen separate palaces and pavilions built across the twentieth century, most now museums covering different subjects: fine arts, royal cars, military hardware, water, and the individual residences themselves with their furniture and fittings. The White Palace and the Green Palace are the largest and most visited, the latter with a mirror hall. At the entrance to the White Palace stand the boots of a colossal bronze statue, the rest of which was removed, left standing on the plinth. The grounds are the other half of the visit, with plane trees, streams and paths.

What you actually see

  • The White and Green palaces - the two principal residences, furnished.
  • The bronze boots - all that was left of a colossal statue at the gate.
  • Eighteen buildings as museums - fine arts, cars, water and military.
  • Wooded hillside grounds - plane trees and streams across the estate.

When to go

April to June and September to November for the grounds. Half a day. Individual palaces are ticketed separately, which adds up quickly; choose two or three. Closed on some public holidays.

Honest expectations

Each palace charges separately and the total for all of them is high. Several museums are thin. There is a lot of walking on a hillside between buildings. Photography inside is often restricted. Weekends are busy with Tehran families.

Nearby

Tajrish bazaar is south; Darband and the mountain trails start above.
