Bukit Kelam

Bukit Kelam is a single mass of granite standing about nine hundred metres out of otherwise flat country east of Sintang in West Kalimantan, and it is routinely described locally and in Indonesian sources as the largest monolithic rock in the world - a claim that depends heavily on how you define monolith and which is not settled, since Uluru and several others are advanced for the same title. What is not in dispute is that it is a striking object: a dark dome with vertical faces, forested at the base, visible for a long way across the plain. It is a nature reserve, home to pitcher plants and orchids on the rock, and it can be climbed by a route of concrete steps and fixed iron ladders bolted to the face, which is steep and exposed in places.

Things to know

The ladders are steep, exposed and not for anyone uneasy with heights; they are also not maintained to any standard. It is hot on bare rock. The monolith claim is local pride, not established fact.
