Sniezka and the Karkonosze Ridge

Sniezka is the high point of the Karkonosze and of the whole Sudetes chain, a rounded stony summit at 1603 metres sitting exactly on the Polish and Czech border. The ridge leading to it is above the treeline, covered in dwarf pine and boulder fields, with glacial cirques dropping away on the Polish side. The summit itself is unmistakable because of the meteorological observatory built there in the 1970s, three flattened discs stacked on the rock, alongside a small stone chapel. Weather changes here are fast and severe for a mountain of this height, and the ridge is regularly in cloud even when the valleys below are clear.

What you actually see

• The summit discs - the observatory buildings on top, along with the chapel and the border marker.
• Sniezne Kotly - deep glacial cirques cut into the northern side of the ridge, seen from the boundary path.
• The Kamienczyk waterfall - the tallest fall in the Polish Karkonosze, in a gorge above Szklarska Poreba.
• Wielki Staw - a dark tarn sitting in a hollow below the main ridge, visible from above.

When to go

June to September is the safe walking window, though cloud can close the summit view on any day. Go early: the ridge often clears in the morning and clouds over by midday. Winter turns the climb into a serious mountain outing with ice and severe wind chill, and the exposed sections need proper equipment and experience.

Honest expectations

The main routes from Karpacz are crowded on summer weekends, with a slow queue on the steep zigzags near the top. The summit is small and gets packed, and the buildings are functional rather than attractive. Wind on the ridge is genuinely strong and cold even in July, the stone paths are hard on the knees, and many people arrive to find nothing but fog.
