Triund Trek

Triund is a grassy ridge at about 2,850 metres reached by a walk of roughly nine kilometres from McLeod Ganj through oak and rhododendron forest, with the last stretch, known as the twenty-two curves, climbing steeply in switchbacks. The reward is position: the ridge sits directly under the Dhauladhar, whose rock and snow wall rises another two thousand metres immediately behind, while the Kangra valley drops away in front. Many walkers camp overnight for sunset and sunrise. The Snowline cafe, an hour further up, marks the edge of the snow in spring and the start of the Indrahar pass route.

When to go

March to June and September to November; snow covers the ridge in winter, and the monsoon brings leeches and slippery ground. Weekends are extremely busy and camping permits have been regulated.

Honest expectations

The trail is crowded, especially at weekends, and litter has been a serious problem. Camping rules have changed repeatedly and should be checked. The climb is steep in the final section.
