Madhubani Painting in Mithila

Madhubani, or Mithila, painting began as domestic wall and floor decoration in the villages of northern Bihar, made by women for weddings and festivals using rice paste, soot, turmeric and other plant and mineral colours applied with twigs and cloth swabs. From the 1960s artists began working on handmade paper, which turned a household practice into something that could be sold and carried away. The style is flat and linear: heavy black outlines, no perspective, and every empty area packed with hatching, dots or fish and flower motifs. Subjects come from epic and local story. In villages around Madhubani town, painted house walls are still part of ordinary life.

When to go

November to February is dry and mild; the months before the monsoon are very hot, and the rains make village roads difficult. Wedding and festival months bring more fresh wall painting. Visits work best arranged through a local contact or a craft organisation, since these are working households rather than a site with opening hours.

Honest expectations

This is rural Bihar, with rough roads, limited accommodation and almost no visitor infrastructure, so most people come as a long day trip from Patna or Darbhanga. Printed reproductions are widely sold as originals. Turning up unannounced at people's homes is intrusive, and the language barrier is real without a guide. Expect heat, dust and a lot of travel.
