Chikankari Embroidery in Lucknow

Chikankari is the fine embroidery associated with Lucknow, traditionally white thread on white or pale cotton, worked with a needle over a printed outline. Its vocabulary runs to dozens of named stitches, including shadow work done from the reverse so the thread shows faintly through the cloth, and pulled-thread jaali that opens tiny mesh windows without cutting a single fibre. The work is divided up: one person prints the pattern in washable blue, others embroider individual stitch types, and the cloth is washed and starched at the end. Most of it is done at home by women across the city and its outskirts, then finished and sold in the shops of Chowk and Aminabad.

• Jaali stitch - threads pulled apart to make tiny open mesh, achieved without cutting the cloth.

When to go

October to March is the sensible season in Lucknow, and also the wedding months, when workshops are busiest and shops are at their fullest. Mornings are best for the old city lanes, before traffic thickens. If you want to watch embroiderers rather than only shop, arrange a workshop visit in advance through a shop or a craft cooperative.

Honest expectations

Machine embroidery and cheap imports are sold as hand chikankari everywhere, and telling them apart takes a close look at the reverse. Prices are quoted high to visitors and haggling is expected. The Chowk lanes are crowded, noisy and hard to navigate. Piece rates for the women who do the stitching are low, which is worth knowing before bargaining hard.
