Charaideo Maidams

Charaideo was the first Ahom capital, founded in 1253, and it remained the burial ground of the dynasty for six centuries. A maidam is a vaulted chamber of brick or stone, built underground, holding the body with grave goods and in earlier practice attendants and possessions, then covered with an earth hemisphere and a low boundary wall, sometimes with a pavilion on top. Around thirty of the better-preserved mounds cluster at Charaideo of some hundred and fifty in the region. UNESCO inscribed them in 2024, the first cultural site in northeast India on the list, with the comparison to Egyptian and Chinese royal tombs made in the nomination.

What you actually see

• The earth mounds - hemispherical tumuli over vaulted brick chambers.
• The open chambers - excavated maidams showing the internal vaults.
• The wooded setting - the burial ground on low hills among trees.
• The site museum - material recovered from the excavated mounds.

When to go

November to March; Assam summers are hot and humid and the monsoon makes the ground boggy. Mornings are quietest. Visitor numbers have risen since the UNESCO listing.

Honest expectations

Most mounds are grassed hemispheres with nothing visible inside; only a few are opened. Interpretation is limited relative to the site's new status. Facilities are basic.
