Sudureyri

Sudureyri sits at the end of Sugandafjordur, connected to Isafjordur by a tunnel bored through the mountain, and it has around three hundred people and a working fish plant. What it has done differently is to turn that into the visit: guided walks take people through the chain from boat to plate - the boats, the landing, the processing, the drying racks - rather than pretending to be a heritage village. The village is heated geothermally from a source in the fjord, which is unusual for the Westfjords. The sun does not reach the village for part of midwinter because of the mountain, and its return is marked locally.

What to expect

This is a small working village, not a resort - if the tours are not running there is little to do. Services are limited and seasonal. The tunnel is long, narrow in parts and unnerving for some drivers.
