Stokkseyri

Stokkseyri sits behind a maze of skerries and shallow lagoons on the south coast, which sheltered boats enough for a fishing village to work here without a real harbour. Guided kayak trips run on the lagoons in summer, threading between rocks with birds all around. In the village is Thuridarbud, a reconstructed fishing hut named for Thuridur Einarsdottir, a nineteenth century boat captain who worked and dressed as a man in a trade that was closed to women and became one of the best known skippers on the coast. The old freezing plant now holds exhibitions, including a long-running one on Icelandic ghosts.
