Gyor Old Town

Gyor sits where the Raba and Rabca run into the Mosoni-Danube, halfway between Budapest and Vienna, and its old town is one of the best-preserved baroque quarters in Hungary. Streets of pastel houses with corner balconies converge on Szechenyi Square, where a column carrying the Ark of the Covenant stands in the open. Uphill from it is the cathedral, rebuilt many times over eight centuries, holding a gilded reliquary bust of King Ladislaus that ranks among the finest surviving pieces of Hungarian goldsmithing. The Bishop's Castle and its tower stand beside it. The restoration of the quarter, carried out slowly from the 1960s onward, has been internationally recognised, and the buildings are shops and flats rather than a museum street.

When to go

April to October for the squares and the riverbanks. The town runs a summer festival season with open-air performances, and the Christmas market fills Szechenyi Square in December. Museums close on Mondays and keep short winter hours. A half day covers the old town comfortably; there is no single sight that demands more.

Honest expectations

Gyor is a working industrial city and the ring roads and factory edges around the centre are unattractive; most visitors pass it on the motorway without stopping. There is no headline monument, so it rewards an unhurried walk and disappoints anyone working through a checklist. Museums keep short and irregular hours. In winter the squares empty out and many cafes close early.
