Diosgyor Castle

Diosgyor was rebuilt in the fourteenth century by Louis the Great as a royal residence on a rectangular plan with four corner towers, an unusual and deliberately regular design for Hungary, and it later became a traditional dower castle held by Hungarian queens. It was ruined after the Ottoman wars and stood as a shell for centuries. Between 2012 and 2014 a large reconstruction rebuilt walls, roofs, floors and the knights' hall to full height, with modern materials openly used, and the result is contested: it gives visitors a legible castle with furnished rooms and events, and it has been criticised by heritage specialists for overwriting the ruin. Both readings are visible on site.

When to go

April to October for events and the open courtyards. Two to three hours. Tournaments and festivals fill the calendar in summer and change the atmosphere entirely.

Honest expectations

The 2014 reconstruction is heavy and not to everyone's taste; if you came for an authentic ruin, this is not it. Summer events crowd the site and add cost. Miskolc around it is a post-industrial city.
