The Clear Water Bay peninsula runs south-east from Kowloon into the sea, and the two beaches on its eastern side, numbered first and second, are among the cleanest and most sheltered close to the city, with fine sand, lifeguards, shark nets and full facilities. Behind them the Clear Water Bay country park covers the ridge, with trails over High Junk Peak, a sharp summit on a route that is short but properly exposed and often listed among the harder ridge walks in Hong Kong. At the southern tip stands the Tin Hau temple at Joss House Bay, and a coastal path runs down toward it past golf links and open headland.

When to go
April to October for swimming; October to April for the ridge walks. Half a day. Weekend buses queue heavily and the beach car park fills early.
Honest expectations
High Junk Peak is genuinely exposed with steep drops and loose rock, and it has caused fatalities; it is not a casual walk. Weekend beach crowds are heavy. Buses are the only practical access and they are slow.
