Nai Harn Beach

Nai Harn sits at the southern end of Phuket, a curve of white sand between two headlands with a freshwater lagoon immediately behind it. The reason it never became Patong is the land: Samnak Song Nai Harn monastery owns much of the ground behind the beach, which has prevented the strip of hotels and bars that lines other Phuket bays, and the beachfront remains largely open with trees and a lake instead. It is the beach Phuket residents use, and the food is local rather than tourist-priced. Between roughly May and October the Andaman monsoon brings serious surf and rip currents to the west coast, and Nai Harn is one of the bays where drownings occur - red flags mean the water is closed, this is enforced, and ignoring them has killed foreign visitors repeatedly. In the calm season the swimming is good and the sunsets from the Windmill viewpoint above are the local fixture.

When to go

November to April for safe swimming and calm water. May to October brings dangerous rips - obey the red flags absolutely.

Honest expectations

Red-flag conditions from May to October are lethal and people drown on Phuket's west coast every year ignoring them. Parking is limited. Facilities are deliberately sparse compared with other Phuket beaches.
