El Picacho

El Picacho rises above Tegucigalpa on the northern side, with the United Nations Park on the summit and a Christ statue of around thirty metres looking down over the city. From the terrace the capital fills the bowl below, spilling up the surrounding hills, with the airport strip visible along the valley floor. The park has gardens and a small zoo, and a cable car now runs up from the city, which is the interesting way to arrive.

When to go

November to April gives the clearest air over the city. Mornings are sharper; haze builds through the day. Weekends bring families up in numbers.

Honest expectations

The zoo in the park is small and the enclosures are dated. Haze over the capital can flatten the view badly, particularly in the dry-season burning months. The road up is steep and narrow.

Central Tegucigalpa is below, and Santa Lucia and Valle de Angeles are east along the ridge road.
