Cantarranas

Cantarranas, officially San Juan de Flores, is an old mining village that took a decision in the 2010s to paint itself: house fronts, walls, stairways and street furniture covered in murals by local and visiting artists, added to steadily since. The name means singing frogs, which the murals make much of. The underlying village is colonial, with a church on the square and cobbled lanes, and the painting has turned a place people drove past into one they stop in.

When to go

November to April is the driest and best for walking. Murals are added and repainted, so the village changes between visits. Weekends bring visitors from the capital.

Honest expectations

It is a small village and an hour or two covers the murals. Facilities are limited to a few small places to eat. Some murals are on private houses and photographing people's front doors deserves a moment's thought.

Nearby

Tegucigalpa is about an hour southwest, and Valle de Angeles is on the way back.
